Morgan Dollars 1894-1921

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 3191
1894 Morgan Dollar. NGC graded Proof 67 Cameo. Lovely untoned gem. A popular date. Only 972 proofs struck. After several years of producing bluntly struck proofs, the mint got back on track in 1894 and struck sharp proof impressions. These coins are semi-keys in the series, demanded by most collectors, but only available to a few due to the absence of offerings at the high end. Not only because of their sharp detail but also because of the lack of high grade business strike Dollars, this particular specimen should easily draw a large number of bids.

The coin has sparkling, brilliant fields throughout with no distracting impairments on either side, as would be expected of the Proof 67 near-perfect grade. The fields are deeply mirrored while by way of contrast there is a significant amount of mint frost over the devices to create a healthy cameo effect. Both sides are virtually white in color without toning. Even the tiniest hair strand and breast feather shows powerfully within the design elements, surrounded by the deeply mirrored fields of what we can only emphasize once more as a truly impressed Morgan. A coin suggestive of an even higher grade assessment. Pop 23; 7 finer; 1 in 67; 2 in 68; 2 in 68 Star; 2 in 69 Star. (PCGS # 7329) .
Estimated Value $8,000 - 10,000.

1894 Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-64. Well struck and frosty. Choice for the grade. A spot-free dazzler whose mint color shames just about any lesser Mint State silver coin of this year and compares favorably with some MS65 specimens we have seen offered. One you have negotiated the wide assortment of dates and grades in the silver dollar section of this sale, you may very well settle on this handsome 1894. It is a low mintage date seldom seen in choice Mint condition. Pop 187; 20 finer; 17 in 65; 3 in 66. (PCGS # 7228) .

1894 Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-63. Popular low mintage date. Another gorgeous Mint State of the strictest order for MS63 quality. The highly lustrous surfaces exhibit silvery untoned radiance. Nicely struck as well, not fully so at the ear, but near enough to merit mention here. Nothing unflattering about this beautiful specimen (PCGS # 7228) .

1894 Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-62. A hint of light toning. Popilar semi key date. An exciting example of a very scarce date, this lightly toned coin displaying soft cartwheel luster. This is a nicely struck example exhibiting fine detail to all the high points and is part of a select run of examples from a consignor who assembled them many years ago, mesmerized by the low mintage and difficulty in obtaining acceptable examples. A coin that should be installed in one of the better Morgan dollar collections. There is nothing to critique in the scheme of smooth luster and bold relief (PCGS # 7228) .

Lot 3196
1894 Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded MS-62. Frosty white coin. Low mintage date. Identifiable by a small chattermark below the right wing. There is little to say about the surfaces of this coin as they are as close to MS63 frostiness as imaginable. The luster is light, satiny and typical for 1894 P-mint dollars (the few that have come down to us in Mint condition, anyway); the luster radiates gently over each side. There is full silvery patina evident as well. All minute detail fully detailed on this bold coin (PCGS # 7228) .

1894 Morgan Dollar. NGC graded AU-50. Lightly toned. A rock solid About Uncirculated example which retains mint frost around the stars and legends and outlining some of the devices. The date, unlike the similar low mintage 1893 and 1899 Philadelphia silver dollars, was overlooked by collectors of the day, and for some reason, only a few dozen made it into hoards. Rolls, bags, and the like of 1894 simple do not, and never did exist. Which is why when a splendid toned AU like this presents itself, we are tempted to ring a loud cowbell to draw bidders' attention to the fact (PCGS # 7228) .

Lot 3208
1894 Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded EF-45. Well struck and untoned. Having gone along like a young colt bouncing around and producing millions of silver dollars each year from 1878, the Philadelphia Mint came to a screeching halt in 1894 and 1895 when the supply of silver ran (pursuant to the repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act of 1890). The 1894 has long been a favorite coin with auction houses and coin dealers hoping to keep a few nice specimens in stock. For these tend to fly out the door almost as fast as they are acquired. The present example is a case in point: we expect numerous bids and a swift disappearance into an appreciative collector's set of Morgan dollars (PCGS # 7228) .

1895 Morgan Dollar. NGC graded Proof 63. Light even golden toning. Popular key date Morgan Dollar. This lightly toned example displays uniform reflectivity as the surfaces are tilted and viewed under incandescent light. And what a thing of beauty it is to behold! Choice throughout, and glittering, meanwhile the strike is typically sharp for the issue with hair curls over Liberty's ear that are virtual fully distinct. Warm even champagne-gold overtones allow the underlying surface to shine through the otherwise medium gray color scheme, features that explain why grade-limiting hairlines are obscured even when viewed close-up. We shall probably never know for certain what became of the business strike 1895 Morgan Dollars, not a single example has ever been authenticated. As such, the Proof of this year 1895 is regarded as the "King of the Morgan Dollars." This is a specimen issue that all date and mint collectors must pursue for the sake of completing their sets. The Proof 1895, therefore, enjoys unflagging popularity and no doubt will far into the future. Estimated have it that perhaps 700 pieces are extant in all grades from an original mintage of 880 coins. A desirable highlight of this sale, and one of the most significant Morgan Dollars that any collector will acquire. Only 880 Proofs minted. Pop 35; 114 finer. (PCGS # 7330) .

Lot 3219
1895 Morgan Dollar. PCGS graded Proof 62. Nice untoned example. This ever so sharply made example displays uniform reflectivity as the surfaces rotate under the light. The strike is typically bold for the key 1895 Proof with hair curls over Liberty's ear that are fully distinct. While silvery color shines through the otherwise medium brilliance of the scheme, these are features that explain why grade-limiting hairlines are only partially evident at most angles. Reports have it that the Philadelphia Mint delivered 12,000 business strike Silver Dollars in 1895, plus 880 Proofs (the latter were included with the six-coin Proof sets sold to collectors). However, no Mint State or worn "circulation strike" coins have ever been positively identified. Either all 12,000 were melted, or the Treasury Department's ledger book recorded a surplus of 1894-dated pieces instead that were not recorded in the ledger until June 1895. Regardless, we can say for certain that Morgan Dollar fanciers will have to eventually find an acceptable Proof such as the present '62' quality survivor if they want to complete their Morgan dollar sets. 880 coins minted. 1896 Morgan Dollar. NGC graded Proof 69 Ultra Cameo. A perfect snow white gem! Over the years, we have been consigned several spectacular Proof 1896 Morgan Dollars. Few of them can compare to this lovely piece, however. Certainly among the most impressive is the NGC-certified 69 Ultra Cameo grade on the holder's insert. One hundred percent struck over all elements of the design, both sides are most noteworthy for the razor-sharp detail they possess. The surfaces combine two qualities. The fields are mirror-deep to a point almost beyond comprehension. At direct light angles, this looks almost black, as though looking into a Black Hole in space in some fantastic sci-fi movie. Meanwhile, the devices are ultra frosted by the dies. Silky smooth in texture, both sides are expertly preserved and readily deserving of the Proof 69 designation for the ultimate in perfection. To cap it all, everything is glistening white.

Collectors who want the ultimate in a Proof Morgan Dollar for inclusion in a type set will likely be on hand and their bid cards (or computer keyboards) at the ready when bidding begins. NGC #2087204-001. Only 762 proofs minted. Second finest: 1 in 69 Star. (PCGS # 7331) .

The stupendous example offered here not only shatters the normally seen striking woes, but its brilliant, gleaming surfaces border on perfection. In fact, only scattered coins offered a few times a year come anywhere near to this handsome 1896 dollar. Struck with systematic exactness throughout, with all of the Mint's talent on display for bidders to admire, there is no need to ignore the central part of the design where a somewhat rounded impression is left by the dies on occasion, even on a few of the Proofs. This coin is decidedly bold in the centers. The cameo effect from the frosted devices, first-rate. 762 proofs minted. Pop 13; 8 finer. (PCGS # 7331) .
